This year Weston High School was fortunate enough to host the Connecticut Special Olympics. The Special Olympics is a global organization that serves athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Many students and teachers participated in this event. Volunteers were able to socialize with the athletes as well as encourage staying active to the participants with disabilities.
Vanessa Sparagna ‘21, who volunteered at the event, says, “I had such an amazing time, it was such a joyful and enlightening experience, it was so great and super fun to help out and help out with such lovely athletes.”
The Special Olympics gave many sports teams an opportunity to help the community, as many of the Weston High School student athletes were required through their teams to participate in the events. There was something for everyone to do, from reffing a tennis match to timing swimming or running trials.
Unfortunately this year the day the affair was held on was not as sunny out as both the athletes and volunteers would have liked; however, everyone was still able to have a good time.
