The Weston Trojan Boys Cross Country team entered the state tournament not as a favorite, but the Trojans came in second to East Lyme, who were considered the favorites going in. Weston placed 2nd out of 23 teams at the Class MM State’s Race. This is a result of all the tireless work put in by the team. All seven of the team’s runners finished in the top 70 out of 169 runners, and 5 runners finish in the top 25.
The highlight of the race was Senior Tim Lautenbach, who finished 2nd in the race running an impressive 17:08 5K. Lautenbach said, “I’ll take second place. I was far behind 1st and 2nd most of the race. I was able to make up a lot of time and catch 2nd on the final stretch.”
As for the rest of the team, Seniors Alex Leo, Matt Sydney and Avery Lum finished 12th, 24th and 67th respectively, running solid times of 17:52, 18:14, and 19:27, as they approached their final races as members of the cross country family.
Freshman Ryan Ruprecht, Sophomore Kevin Crowley, and Junior Matt Lagana, also partook in the event, coming in 13th, 44th and 23rd respectively, and coming in with times of 17:53, 18:44 and 18:14. Ruprecht, after completing his extremely successful freshman season, seems to be the future of the team, as the Trojans will be graduating 16 seniors this year.
Lautenbach reflected at the time, “Today went very well. There was a lot of depth in the field. Although we didn’t get first, we’re very happy with how we all ran.”
Matt Sydney, one of three captains on the team, shared his take on Saturday’s success. “Today went really well, and I think the entire team should be proud of what we accomplished. Coach Gawlak prepared us well, and this is the first time that the team made [State] Opens since President Nixon was in office. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Friday.” Coach Peter Gawlak said, “All the guys ran extremely hard and practiced hard. I’m very happy and excited for our future.”
